چکیده

Near-field pulse-type ground motions (NPGMs) are characterized by a high-energy pulse with large peak velocities and accelerations need further studies to confirm whether structures viscous dampers (VDs) still applicable effective for this type of motions. In article, the vibration reduction performance VDs under near-field earthquakes is investigated systematically. Displacement acceleration spectra developed single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure without VDs, while these influence factors, such as nonlinear characteristic structure, damper supports’ flexibility, parameters, considered. Additionally, frequency domain characteristics NPGM energy distribution multidegree-of-freedom (MDOF) discussed reveal action mechanism on structure. It shown that shows remarkable seismic effect near-fault earthquake, maximum interstorey drift decreased from 0.086 0.037 when equipped VDs. However, may be difficult completely dissipate generated earthquake high period in short time, which can cause damaged or even collapsed moment.

Performance of Mid-rise Buildings with Tubular Structure Under the Effect of Near Field Earthquakes

The aim objective of this study is to investigate the effects of near-field earthquakes on the response of mid-rise buildings with tubular structure.  For this purpose, a 20-story building with a square plan of six by six bays, all with 6 m span, and story height of 3.70 m is considered.  Axial force of columns, shear lag, and inter-story drift values are used as the main response parameters. N...

Vibration Control of Structures with Initially Accelerated Passive Tuned Mass Dampers under Near-Fault Earthquake Excitation

This article deals with the applicability of passive tuned mass damper (PTMD) for reducing the dynamic responses of structures under near-fault earthquake excitations. Three types of pulse-like time functions are employed to simulate the near-fault ground motion. The vibration control effectiveness of PTMDs is extensively investigated through the comparisons of response spectrum and response ti...

Adaptive control of base-isolated structures against near-field earthquakes using variable friction dampers

This paper investigates the effectiveness of two adaptive control strategies for modulating control force of variable friction dampers (VFDs) that are employed as semi-active devices in combination with laminated rubber bearings for seismic protection of buildings. The first controller developed in this study is an adaptive fuzzy neural controller (AFNC). It consists of a direct fuzzy controlle...

effects of higher modes on vertical distribution of isolated structures under near field earthquakes

it has been pointed out the static lateral response procedure for a base-isolated structure proposed in international building code (ibc) somewhat overestimates the seismic story force. that is why in the current paper, vertical distribution of base shear over the height of isolated structures considering higher mode effects under near field earthquakes is investigated. nonlinear behavior of is...

The Effectiveness of Viscous Dampers for Structures Subjected to Large Earthquakes

The efficacy of dampers in providing seismic protection has been validated by the excellent performance of buildings fitted with dampers in the past earthquakes. However, previous studies have not accounted for the limit states of dampers. Recently, a multi-year research project was completed that investigated the seismic performance of building with dampers subject to large earthquakes. It was...
